Eunice’s story is not just a cheatsheet into investing in Africa (which by the way has had 51 Private Equity exits in the last 10 years, with 478 deals worth $8.6 billion), but real talk on how hard it still is to build in the emerging markets.
Today’s guest speaking to the African continent is none other than Eunice Ajim, Cameroonian-American tech entrepreneur and investor who’s changing the game. With her fund, Ajim Capital, she seeks to invest in Africa’s best startups at the pre-seed and seed level; leveraging her experience as a former repeat founder herself, including leading a $10M+ tech startup. But what many may not know is her story of becoming homeless while building what she calls the African dream.
1. Nothing good in life comes easy; if it were easy, everyone would be doing it.
"So, just hang in there and keep showing up; eventually, things will change."
"After the thunder, your rainbow is coming."
2. "Give me an opportunity, and we'll figure it out."
In 2020, as the world grappled with the mass resignation and a shortage of human capital, that's when they reached out to software engineers in Africa. Venturing into the African market at an early stage might seem reckless to most, but the reality is that there is just as much opportunity in Africa as in many emerging markets undergoing significant transformation.
3. "I'm in this business for the rest of my life, and if it takes the rest of my life to define, that's okay."
When asked, "Why don't you work for another venture capital firm?" Eunice shared the experience of "being your own boss," which led to rare opportunities for making mistakes and learning from them.
4. "...If God put this in my mind, it's to build something meaningful that would change the lives of millions."
Despite her love for the continent and recognizing Africa's immense market potential, there are more challenges beyond building a tech company in Africa. Amidst the voices of doubt, Eunice put her faith first and persevered to fulfill her purpose of providing the resources and impact that African entrepreneurs need.
5. “... there’s no sugar-coating,”
When the risk is truly high, gaining a deep understanding of the market's true status is crucial. This includes knowledge of the country's legal restrictions, jurisdiction, currency, and culture. Investors need to be well-informed about the African market, or any foreign market, without sugar-coating the challenges they may face.

“…no Ivy League degree, wealthy family, or VC/PC experience,” Growing up in Cameroon, Eunice has always aspired to be a successful entrepreneur. As Eunice took the leap to quit her 9-5 job and decided to be her own boss, she faced homelessness and countless obstacles. Even so she persisted and opportunity came to her. Earnestly driven by her ambition to make a significant impact in the continent that she loves, she then launched a venture capital fund, Ajim Capital, to invest in and support hundreds of incredible companies across Africa.
